MIAMI - June 30, 2006 - Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc., the country's largest distributor of wine and spirits, today announced that they will collaborate with The Culinary Institute of America (CIA), the world's premier culinary college. Effective May 31, 2006, the Company is to make a series of scholarship gifts to the CIA. Based in Hyde Park, New York, the CIA was founded in 1946. The CIA opened a second campus, called the CIA at Greystone, in St. Helena, California in 1995. Founded in 1968, Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc. operates in 21 states and, pending the closing of its latest transaction, in six more states.
Benefiting degree program students of The Culinary Institute of America, Southern Wine & Spirits of America’s gift will go toward the creation of three separate scholarship funds, according to Wayne E. Chaplin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Southern Wine & Spirits of America. The three new scholarship funds are: The Southern Wine & Spirits Expendable Scholarship Fund; The Southern Wine & Spirits Endowed Scholarship Fund; and The Southern Wine & Spirits Learning Strategies Center Expendable Testing Fund.
In recognition of Southern Wine & Spirits of America’s philanthropy, The Culinary Institute of America announced it will rename its on-campus facility previously known as the Learning Strategies Center as “The Southern Wine & Spirits Learning Strategies Center,” according to CIA President Dr. Tim Ryan.
A 1977 graduate of the CIA, Dr. Ryan said of the new Southern Wine & Spirits of America endowment gift:
“The CIA is grateful for the generous scholarship gifts from Southern Wine & Spirits of America. Our talented faculty and our enterprising students look forward to the many educational and wine and spirits-related seminars, tastings and server training programs that Southern Wine & Spirits professionals and CIA educators will be hosting throughout the year.”
